Energy conversation

Positive-Strength Energy, absence and return to work

What gives and what costs energy, and where someone's strengths lie.

You notice signs of overload sooner in what someone still does than in what they say. A regular conversation about what gives and costs energy makes adjusting course ordinary instead of tense. And it is just as much about strengths as about what is hard.

When to use it

  • I want to know how a team member works best

Tip

This conversation is about the work, not about health. Do not ask about a diagnosis or about how someone's health is. If the conversation goes there, occupational health or their GP is the right place. If someone is on sickness absence or a phased return, do not ask what they can or cannot do: the employee can tell you themselves, and occupational health advises.

Hi Chloe, I would like to plan a conversation with you about your work: what gives you energy, what costs energy and where your strengths are. The last few weeks have been busy. I would like to look together at how your work feels now, before we start the next period. Your tasks and your working agreements stay in place, and nothing is at stake. We will look together at what could make your work lighter or more enjoyable. These are the questions I would like to talk about with you: • Which tasks gave you energy in the last few weeks? • Which tasks or moments cost the most? Even if nobody would guess it from the outside. • What are you good at that you do not get to use enough at the moment? • What would you like to take out of your week this month? You are welcome to answer them in advance, on paper or by email. You do not have to; they are here mainly so you know what is coming. When: Thursday 19 November at 14:00, for about 45 minutes. Where: in the small meeting room, or on a walk if you prefer I will put what we agree in writing within a day and send it to you. Best wishes, Olivia
