Feedback builder
Positive-Strength Conversations
Behaviour, effect and request, with praise and points to work on kept separate.
"You come across as a bit curt" is not feedback: there is nothing in it that anyone can change. Feedback works when you describe what you saw, what the effect was and what you are asking for from now on. With a specific moment attached, and without adjectives.
When to use it
- I want to give feedback
Tip
Give praise and points to improve separately. Many people have learned to distrust praise, because a "but" so often followed. Praise without a request is the kind that really lands.
What you fill in
- What do you want to give?
- Team member's name
- When was it?
- What exactly did they do or say?
- What was the effect?
- What are you asking for from now on, or what should stay?
- Room to respond later, in writing too
- Your name

Hi James,
I have one point about the team meeting on Tuesday. It is about this one moment, not about your work as a whole.
What I saw: When Priya showed her plan for the new customer letter, you said straight away that the timeline was wrong and that it would not work.
The effect: You were right about the timeline. But the rest of the plan, which was well put together, was not discussed after that, and Priya did not say anything for the rest of the meeting.
What I am asking: Next time, start with what is good in it, and then name the point that is wrong. That way we hear both.
You do not need to respond straight away. Tomorrow, or by email, is fine too.
Best wishes,
Olivia
