Onboarding plan: 30, 60, 90 days

Function-Strength Onboarding

For each stage, what you do and when it is good enough.

A new job is a long series of unfamiliar steps. If someone does not know what is expected of them and when, they start guessing, and guessing costs energy. A plan for the first three months says for each period what you do and when it is good enough.

When to use it

  • A new colleague is starting soon

Tip

Keep "good enough" deliberately modest. Nobody needs to be able to do everything after thirty days; say so. Look back together after each period and adjust the plan.

Onboarding plan for Tom, customer service adviser First working day: Monday 4 January Your fixed point of contact: James Okafor, a colleague from the team The first 30 days • Shadowing James on phone and email • Getting to know the fifty most frequent customer questions • From week 3, answering emails yourself, with James reading along Good enough when: You answer the simple emails yourself. When in doubt, you ask James; that is exactly the idea. Days 31 to 60 • Phone and email on your own, with James as back-up • Meeting the colleagues in invoicing • One fixed half day a week for complaints Good enough when: You handle most questions yourself. You still talk complaints through with James before you reply. Days 61 to 90 • Taking a full part in the rota • Handling complaints yourself up to £50 • Bringing one improvement to the team meeting Good enough when: You work independently. You know who to go to when something is new. Regular moments to look back • Every Friday at 15:00, fifteen minutes with Hannah • After 30, 60 and 90 days, a half-hour conversation What can wait: Weekend shifts, the new customer system and the project group. Those come after the first three months. This plan is a starting point. After each period we look together at whether it fits, and adjust it where needed.
