Predictability-Strength
The reliable creator of calm and mental space
The less someone has to guess what is coming, the more room is left for the work. Uncertainty costs energy, even when nothing is wrong. Predictability is not rigidity: you fix enough so that people can be flexible when it really counts.
What you may notice at work
- Tension or panic at an announcement, while nothing has been decided yet.
- Lots of questions before a conversation, or shutting down during it.
- Difficulty with changes to the rota, the workspace or the schedule.
What helps
- Start with what is fixed.
- Announce conversations in writing, with the questions included.
- Say what kind of conversation it is: catching up, thinking together or deciding.
- Put decisions in writing within a day.
